Deck Building in Shawnigan Lake and the Cowichan Valley

Deck builders serving Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, Cobble Hill, Duncan and Ladysmith

A new deck off the kitchen, a second storey deck with a view, or a full tear-out and replacement. Matts Island Construction has been building decks across the Cowichan Valley since 2013, and decks are the work our customers call us for most.

We build in composite and wood, add the railings and stairs that suit your home, and handle the job from the footings to the final cleanup. You deal with one contractor from start to finish.

What we build

Most new decks we build are composite. It's made from reclaimed wood and recycled plastics, and today's capped boards hold up to moisture, mould and fading far better than the early versions did. It comes in a range of colours, never needs staining, and soap and water keeps it looking good.

Wood is still a good choice for a classic look or a tighter budget, and we build it too. We also build patios and ground level decks, and finish every job with railings in aluminum, glass or wood, plus solid stairs and landings. If your old deck is past saving, we'll remove it and haul it away first.

Composite decking

Composite boards resist rot and pests, and never need sanding or staining.

Wood decking

A classic look at a lower upfront cost, kept sound with regular cleaning and sealing.

Railings that fit

Aluminum, glass or wood railings, chosen to suit your view and your home.

Stairs and landings

Solid, even stairs built to match the deck, from a single step to a full staircase.

Built for island weather

Decks here spend much of the year in the rain. That's why we pay attention to the parts you don't see once the job is done: solid footings, sound framing and good drainage, so water runs off instead of sitting.

Want the space under your deck to stay dry too? Ask about vinyl decking, which gives the deck a waterproof surface.

Matt's was so professional and quick with my deck, it looks so great. I would refer him to anyone that needs construction done. He called me about a week after completion to see if I was pleased with everything.

Deck building questions

How much does a new deck cost?

It depends on the size, the height off the ground, the decking and railing you choose, and how much site prep is needed. Composite costs more upfront than wood but needs far less upkeep. We'll visit, measure and give you a free, no-obligation quote with the numbers laid out.

Should I choose composite or wood?

Composite costs more at the start, but the boards won't rot, never need staining and clean up with soap and water. Wood gives a classic look at a lower price, but it needs cleaning and resealing every few years. We'll talk through both and recommend what suits your deck and budget.

Do I need a permit for my deck?

It depends on the deck's height and size and where you live. Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay and Cobble Hill fall under the Cowichan Valley Regional District, while Duncan and Ladysmith have their own municipal rules. We'll walk you through what your project needs before any work starts.

Do you help with the design?

Yes. We look at your yard, how you plan to use the space and what you like, then help you settle on the size, layout, materials and railing. You'll know exactly what's being built before we start.

How long does a new deck take?

That depends on the size, the materials and the time of year. We'll give you a timeline with your quote and keep you updated as the job goes.

Can you replace my old deck?

Yes. We remove and dispose of the old deck, check what's underneath and build the new one in its place. If the framing is still sound, we'll tell you, and a resurface may be all you need.
