Fence Installation in Shawnigan Lake and the Cowichan Valley

Fence installation and repair in Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, Cobble Hill, Duncan and Ladysmith

A good fence gives you privacy, keeps kids and pets in and finishes off your yard. Matts Island Construction builds and repairs fences and gates across the Cowichan Valley, on flat lots and tricky sloped ones alike.

Cedar privacy fences, picket fences, chain link, gates and fence extensions. We plan it with you, set the posts solid and build it to last.

What we build

Cedar is the popular choice here for privacy fences, and we also build lower decorative styles, install chain link, build matching gates and extend existing fences. Custom heights, paint and stain are all options.

Rocky ground, slopes and retaining walls are common around here. We work with the site instead of fighting it, setting posts in concrete and stepping or following the grade as needed.

Plan the line

We walk the property with you to settle the layout, height and style.

Solid posts

Posts are set in concrete, even where the ground is rock or slope.

Build and finish

Cedar or your chosen material, built straight and true, with stain or paint if you want it.

Repair, not replace

If your fence can be saved, we fix the posts, rails and boards instead of starting over.

Repair before you replace

A leaning section or a broken post doesn't always mean a new fence. We replace rotted posts, re-secure rails, swap out damaged boards and rehang sagging gates, and we'll tell you honestly when a repair makes more sense than a rebuild.

Planning a fence and a deck? We also do deck building, so the two can be planned together.

What fence customers say

1 / 3

The fence is along the property line involving a sloped yard with a partial retaining wall, huge rocks and boulders. He had to wedge a 6x6 post between two rocks by shaving the bottom three feet of the post to allow placement in a concrete casing he built himself. Matt showed true ingenuity, grit and a great sense of humor.

Donna KarlikGoogle review

Matt went above and beyond building a fence for us a neighbor. He was extremely patient with the planning process and changes that unfolded. He came in on budget and took pride in his work.

Tammy BigelowGoogle review

Matt has always been professional and consistent with his construction. He prides himself on doing great quality work. I would highly recommend Matt’s Island Construction. He’s done vinyl decking, fencing, deck railing extension, gates and many other odd jobs around my home/property.

Fence questions

How much does a new fence cost?

It depends on the length and height, the material, how many gates you need and the ground it's going on. Rock and slopes take more work than a flat lot. We'll walk the line with you and give you a free, no-obligation quote.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

Fence rules, like maximum heights, depend on where you live. Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay and Cobble Hill fall under the Cowichan Valley Regional District, while Duncan and Ladysmith set their own. We'll walk you through what your fence needs.

Should I talk to my neighbour first?

It's a good idea, especially for a fence on the property line. Shared fences are common, and we're happy to work with both neighbours on the plan.

Can you build a fence on a slope or rocky ground?

Yes. Slopes, rock and retaining walls are common in the Cowichan Valley. We step the fence or follow the grade and set posts to suit the ground, even when that takes some creative work.

Can you repair my fence instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If most of the fence is sound, we replace the failing posts, rails or boards and get it standing straight again. If it's past saving, we'll tell you.
