Deck Repair in Shawnigan Lake and the Cowichan Valley
Deck repair in Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, Cobble Hill, Duncan and Ladysmith
A deck that's soft underfoot, wobbly at the railing or letting water through doesn't always need replacing. Matts Island Construction repairs wood, composite and vinyl decks across the Cowichan Valley, and we'll tell you straight whether a repair will do the job.
From rotten boards to sagging framing, failing posts or a full refinish, we fix the problem properly so you can get back to using your deck.
What we fix
On wood decks we replace rotted boards, joists and posts, re-secure popped nails and screws, rebuild tired stairs, firm up loose railings, and jack and level a deck that has started to sag. Then we clean, stain and seal so the wood stays protected.
Composite decks need less care, but boards can scratch or fade, and older uncapped boards can warp. We replace damaged boards and show you how to clean them the right way. We also repair and restore patios: re-setting pavers, re-mortaring flagstone and patching concrete.
Rot and boards
We open up the damaged area, cut out the rot and replace boards, joists or posts with new lumber.
Structure and stairs
Sagging decks get jacked and levelled, and loose stairs and railings are made solid again.
Clean, stain, seal
Wood decks are washed, stained and sealed to protect them through the wet months.
Composite care
Damaged composite boards are swapped out, and we clean composite without a pressure washer.

Fix it before it spreads
Rot rarely stays put. Water that gets into one board or post works its way into the framing, and a small repair turns into a big one. Catching it early is the cheapest fix there is.
Is your deck surface vinyl or fibreglass and starting to crack or leak? Our vinyl decking page covers resurfacing.

What deck repair customers say
We were fortunate to hire Matt's Island Construction for the repair and update of our upstairs deck. The project required thorough cleaning, patching holes, and leveling the area to ensure proper water runoff. Matt didn't take any shortcuts, which gives us confidence we will be able to enjoy our deck for years to come.
Matt is an excellent communicator, keeping us informed throughout the entire process of repairing our deck. He was punctual, paid close attention to detail, and completed the job on time.
He did make the time right away after he worked all day to get my repair done before the rain came that was predicted the next day. I have to say that I am so impressed by his excellent quality of work, being here when he said he would on time and very personable.
Throughout the day, he is sending texts with pictures of each stage of the job that he was doing repairing our deck. How many tradesman do that? ... He does great work, and is definitely someone we will use in future for any home repair or painting jobs.
Deck repair questions
Should I repair my deck or replace it?
If the framing and posts are mostly sound, a repair is usually the better value. If rot has spread through the structure, replacing it may cost less in the long run. We'll inspect it and give you an honest recommendation either way.
How do I know if my deck has rot?
Look for soft or spongy boards, dark patches that stay damp, wood that splits easily and posts that move when you push on them. Press a screwdriver into a suspect spot. If it sinks in easily, it's time to call us.
How often should a wood deck be stained and sealed?
Most wood decks need cleaning and resealing every few years, depending on sun, shade and traffic. If water stops beading on the surface, it's due. We clean, stain and seal so the wood stays protected.
Do you repair composite decks?
Yes. We replace damaged or warped boards, fix the framing underneath and can advise you on cleaning. Capped composite usually needs nothing more than soap and water.
Can you handle urgent repairs?
