Vinyl Decking in Shawnigan Lake and the Cowichan Valley
Vinyl decking in Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, Cobble Hill, Duncan and Ladysmith
A vinyl deck is a waterproof membrane laid over a plywood deck, so the deck surface sheds water like a roof. It's the go-to choice for decks and balconies over living space, carports and entries, and by special request flat porch roofs too, and it suits the rain we get across the Cowichan Valley.
Matts Island Construction installs new vinyl decks, replaces worn vinyl and resurfaces old, cracked fibreglass decks. It's one of the jobs our customers ask us for most.
How we do it
We install Deksmart vinyl, our main supplier, a BC company whose membranes are designed for the wet Pacific Northwest, where rain is always in the forecast. It comes in a wide range of colours and patterns, so you can match your siding or pick a look that stands out.
Good vinyl starts underneath. We strip the old surface, check the framing and sheathing, replace any plywood that isn't sound and make sure water has somewhere to go. Then the membrane goes down with tight, flat seams and clean edges, finished with metal edge flashing.
Strip and inspect
We remove the old vinyl or fibreglass and check the plywood and framing underneath.
Solid new base
Damaged sheathing is replaced with solid tongue and groove plywood, with the slope checked so water drains.
Membrane and seams
The vinyl goes down with straight, flat seams and neat work around posts and corners.
Railings and trim
We finish with metal edge flashing and new vinyl, aluminum or glass railings if you want them.

Easy to look after
Own a garden hose? That's most of the upkeep. Rinse your vinyl deck each spring, sweep off leaves and grit, and put pads under furniture legs. There's no painting, staining or sealing.
If your vinyl does get a tear or a soft spot, it can often be repaired without redoing the whole deck. See deck repair for vinyl and wood repairs.

What vinyl deck customers say
Matt resurfaced our deck, removing the old cracked fibreglass surface and the old plywood that had been installed incorrectly. He replaced it with solid T&G plywood and a new vinyl surface, then replaced our railing system. ... We were impressed with Matt's attention to detail: the seams and edges are all straight and flat.
We recently had the vinyl on both of our decks replaced, and Matt did an outstanding job. He communicated with us throughout the process, showed up exactly when scheduled, and was ready to get to work right away. The quality of his workmanship is excellent, and our new decks look fantastic.
I've had vinyl laid before and frankly, his seams are the best I've seen.
He kept in touch with us prior to doing the job and was on time and ready to start on the scheduled date. The quality of workmanship Matt provides is second to none, superb, and our new decks look awesome.
Vinyl decking questions
What is a vinyl deck?
Vinyl decking is a tough, waterproof sheet membrane installed over a plywood deck surface, with sealed seams so water runs off instead of soaking through. That makes it a strong choice for decks and balconies with living space, a carport or storage below.
Can you resurface my old fibreglass deck?
Yes. We remove the old cracked fibreglass, check the plywood underneath and replace it where needed, then install a new vinyl surface. If your railing is tired too, we can replace it at the same time.
Can vinyl go over my existing deck?
Often, yes, as long as the framing is sound. Vinyl needs a solid plywood base, so we check the structure first and tell you honestly what it needs.
How long does a vinyl deck last?
With a good install and simple care, a vinyl deck lasts for many years. The biggest factors are a solid, well sloped base and tight seams, which is where we take our time.
What colours can I choose from?
Deksmart vinyl comes in a wide range of colours and patterns. We'll help you pick one that suits your siding, trim and the look you're after.
